Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing Review

When the original Last Exile series came out eight years ago, it has already been created with beautiful animation and detailed CG gunships. But with time and evergrowing technology, the new series, Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing, looks even better. Armed with new cutting edge technology, this series has a different feel from the first; the new mechanical and charcter designs, and even better CG compared to it's predecessor. The opening scene follows the two new main characters as they fly through the clouds in their aircraft. With it's breathtaking action and flying manuveur, and with clouds that look almost realistic, this will be a treat for the eyes of all loving animes.

Unlike the first series, this new story takes place on Earth, although it's an Earth that we're unfamiliar with—there are eight objects in the sky that resemble moons, but as production designer Kobayashi hints, it's a secret that's yet to be revealed in the first episode. The series follows two sky pirates named Fam and Giselle who help out their community by taking down massive airships in their Vespas. In this version of earth, the giant targets are called “whales,” and by harpooning them and forcing them to breach, they can be commandeered. It's a fitting analogy once you see the airships go belly-up on the clouds, it's a sight that's strangely elegant.

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing has a lot of promise. The Director for Last Exile is Koichi Chigira whom is also the director of the series Tower of Druaga. The Character Design for Last Exile is from Range Murata, Junichi Takaoka, Osamu Horiuchi who also work in the designing for various Gondo productions, and also the main voice actor for last exile is none other then Toyosaki Aki, who also voiced Yui from K-On!!.

This show is off to a pretty good start, with it's amazing and stunning visual and characters that are instantly likeable because of their bright personality, this is definitely a series to look forward to.
